The Housing Agency was requested by the DHPCLG to complete three research projects to help inform the National Housing Strategy for People with a Disability. The three reports are:

  1. A Review of Good Practice Models in the Provision of Housing and Related Supports for People with a Disability [PDF 1mb]
  2. A Review of Housing and Support Options for People with Mental Health related Housing Needs [PDF 1mb]
  3. A Review of the Potential of the Private Rented Sector in the Provision of Accommodation for People with Disabilities [PDF 1.2mb]

The research used mixed methods to gather relevant information, including:

  • Census and other statistical information
  • Documentation of current practice
  • Literature reviews (domestic and international)
  • Face-to-face interviews with service users and providers

The focus of the research was to identify better ways of planning and providing service for people with disabilities. The cornerstones for good practice in the provision of housing and related supports for people with a disability are:

  • Housing design
  • Planned response to need
  • Inter-agency co-operation
  • Effective information provision
