Credit Unions are financial co-operatives where members can save and lend to each other at fair rates of interest. They are non-profit organisations that have a volunteer ethos and community focus. In order to join a credit union, you must have a common bond with its members such as location or Occupation.
There are two main umbrella bodies for credit unions - the Irish League of Credit Unions (ILCU) and the Credit Union Development Association (CUDA). Most credit unions belong to one of these bodies and you can find your nearest Credit Union on their website.

The Money Advice and Budgeting Service (MABS) is a free, independent and confidential service that provides support in all areas of financial debt including mortgage arrears, bank loans, overdrafts, utilities and credit cards.
MABS services include:
• Helping clients to deal with debts and to make out budgets
• Examining clients' incomes to make sure entitlements are not being missed
• Contacting clients' creditors with offers of payment (where this is necessary)
