Journey to Independent Living “Understand me, include me” campaign

The National Housing Strategy for Disabled People 2022–2027 sets out a clear vision:

To support disabled people to live independently, with choice and control over where, how, and with whom they live, and to make sure housing is accessible, inclusive, and supported in the community.

The strategy includes a number of stakeholders working together to provide a more cohesive and solidified plan to support disabled people. Stakeholders include local authorities, the Health Service Executive (HSE) and groups known as Housing Disability Steering Groups (HDSGs) who advocate on behalf of disabled people in their communities.

To help achieve this, a national awareness campaign, Journey to Independent Living, has been launched. Following on from the 2024 campaign, which can be found here -  Accessible Information On Awareness Campaigns and Stories

This campaign aims to raise awareness on communication alongside  housing options and supports available to disabled people who want to live independently.

What independent living means

Independent living means being able to choose where you live having the support you need to live the life you want. Disabled people have the same right as everyone else to live in their community, make decisions about their home, and be included in daily life. There are a number of supports and services available to allow a person to live independently.

Online resources

in 2024 the Home and Supports Hub website was developed. This brings together practical information and resources for disabled people, their families, and supporters. It’s designed to make it clearer and accessible to find out about housing options, the supports available, and how to access them.
